Can you become Jain if you weren't born into a Jain family?

Top answer

Yes. Jain teaching says your spiritual worth comes from conduct, not birth, and there's no required conversion ritual. Many people simply start by learning, taking up practices (vegetarianism, samayika, the small vows) at their own pace, and connecting with a temple or community. What's more complicated is the social side. A lot of Jain community life is organised around families and castes, especially in India, so newcomers sometimes find the philosophy more welcoming than the social scene. Diaspora centres in the UK and US tend to be more open to curious outsiders. Plenty of people also draw on Jain ideas without formally identifying as Jain, which the tradition's many-sidedness is fairly relaxed about.
